Why a doula???

You’re probably wondering why I decided to become a doula, and specifically a full spectrum doula. I have three reasons. Their names are Ernesto, Osiel, and Zella. I had three babies, and three VERY different pregnancy experiences, and three very different deliveries. These experiences as well as the fact that there has been a consistent wave of friends asking for my advice during their pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum experiences, made me realize I am a valuable resource for people experiencing pregnancy and childbirth. Over the years I’ve found myself supporting other mothers, even without realizing that’s what was happening at the time. I also found that many found comfort in confiding in me about their pregnancies, even before they were ready to share that they were pregnant.

There is also a fourth reason that I chose this path, and that is because Black women face the highest mortality rate during childbirth than any other group. I almost became a part of that statistic (that will be explained in another blog post.) Being a Black woman, I ADORE Black women, and constantly seek to create safety for us in a world that is consistently and constantly unsafe for us. I currently live in Tucson, AZ and recently had a baby myself. I also noticed the lack of Black birthworkers. So, I decided to fill the need. (I provide services for all families and individuals, but my focus is ALWAYS Black people first.)

While a few months pregnant I set out to achieve my new goal, and signed up for a doula training that I felt would be address MY needs, and the need I’m trying to fill. (More on that in a future blog post as well.) I’m very excited to get started on this journey, and look forward to empowering families and individuals during their childbirth journey, and beyond. As a full spectrum doula I will support families and individuals before (via fertility and prenatal support), during (labor and delivery), and after (postpartum, placenta encapsulation, and as a sex doula). **Currently I’m still training, and will only be providing birth doula services (prenatal, labor and delivery, and a little postpartum).**
