Canopy Club/ Work in Progress

We’re one month into Canopy Club and it’s been so amazing. Day one helped me unlock something I’ve been stuck on for months. So now I’m working on getting that piece done next. I started by dyeing the backgrounds (a while ago), then creating the screens, then creating the pigments I needed for these two panels. The backgrounds are done, and now I’m working on the piecing. I learned from the last one, that I need to try to plan it out at much as possible before I start attaching ANYTHING.

Although I did a test with some leftover pigments that I had, I wanted to test the natural pigments I did to see how they were printing. I was a little disappointed at first, because, as always, it dried differently that it was while wet. So it went from a bold red to a more muted color. BUT on the background (which is more of a red clay color) it dried more of a blood red, which is actually perfect for what I needed.

Next I had to figure out which color to use for my figures. I opted for the darker indigo, because I think it’ll pop the best once I do all the piecing and embroidery.

Playing with the additional aspects to see how the colors play.

Getting somewhere…

Now that I can do screenprinting I’m very excited about the future of my work. I love to print textiles for the backgrounds and piecing, but without knowing how to extract natural pigments, I was kind of stuck. I think my work will FINALLY be able to represent my visions. I love texture and layering and I’m so excited to really push that further. Which is the feedback my mentor gave me at the beginning of the program. To push the little details and layering and what not. Having a mentor that sees my strengths and is well versed in the art world, has been invaluable in helping me figure out the next steps. And hopefully I’ll be able to put out work much more quickly.
